Tough loss for the Patriots last night! I was sorry to see them lose, but it was a tight game. I may teach some of the youth in the pictures below to play football! the opportunities are endless in my community! you never know what you can accomplish there without trying! so, it was a good "American" weekend, but I am back to living like a Dominican or at least a gringa living in the Dominican Republic! I am getting more and more integrated in my community every day and only when I leave do I really feel like a an outsider in this country. I guess you could say the people are getting used to me.
I am also looking into renting a house and moving out of my host family's place. They are a great family but like any good, independent American woman, I am ready to move out just when I get comfortable! The community is apprehensive about this move because women just do not live alone here. It is about just as common as a white woman living in a Dominican Batey, so I figure why not! I am excited about living alone, making my own coffee, inviting youth over for meetings and planting a garden. I have also adopted a little puppy! She has yet to be spade or get shots, but she is mine. She sleeps in my room and I feed her milk from my family's cow. Her name is Lola. She certainly isn't a guard dog, but she is comforting. so, that is the latest right now in my life.
more to come later this month!
Much love to the U.S.!
Rach

Rach!! My mom just gave me a link to your blog. I loved it. I started a blog when I first arrived in Ghana but I have not kept up with it...oops. It sounds like you are having a really amazing time there. I'm jealous of your beach scenes, I miss the ocean terribly. Although I live in a coastal country, I live in the north and travel here is difficult so I don't get to make it to the beach often, just once in the 17 months that I've been here. I'm leaving for a trip overland through Burkina Faso, Mali, and Senegal so I'm very excited about that. Anyway, fabulous to read what you have been up to. Keep up the positive attitude. I know it can be hard sometimes, but you seem to be doing well. I can totally relate to a lot of what you wrote about the celebration when electricity comes on, and the always being surrounded by people. I miss you! Love you! Kyla
