The pregnant girl is wearing my dress from Anthropologie! something tells me she doesn't know much about the store, but I don't think the clothing company knows much about her either. Regardless, she is a beautiful woman who I spent a lot of time with, not necessarily speaking to, but sitting with, eating with, living with, teaching English to and sharing eye contact with when our shared sense of humor surfaced. I don't know her actual name, but she goes by Mella (twin) because she is a twin. She is due in April!
Bemond is the man with yellow "birkenstocks". He was one of my closest friends in Las Pajas and built the bamboo benches with me. He is Haitian Dominican, the community barber and will be graduating 8th grade this June!
Bemond and Umberto are two of my favorite muchachos in the community. Umberto is 15 and refers to condoms as "chicle Americano." I nicknamed him, Flaquito Fuerte (skinny strong). He is a very skinny guy, but strong in character!
The next picture is a photo of an amazing family who live next to the Sala de Tarea. They are a family of 7 with Mom and Dad! The boys are always taking care of their younger siblings and have perfect attendence for River Fridays!
The final photo is of Elvio, the main leader in the community and my two-year-old brother, Baba. Elvio helped me with just about everything remotely professional I tried to do in the community. He is known and overwhelmingly respected throughout the surrounding Bateys. He is getting married to Wilma, a woman in a nearby Batey in August.

our students would love to hear more about your part of the world.
wow, two amazing points: the fact that that dress was from anthropologies being arbitrary and the fact that they call condoms 'chicle americano'
Very interesting indeed. do they refer to it as gum because they're really common and passed around or offered to people often?
that photo of the woman in the dress is amazing, by the way. to get a glimpse of my world right now, i just finished watching america's next top model so i was looking at that photo in terms of poses and stuff.
ahh. I hope you are doing well, I miss you and think of you! I'm going to spend the summer in China. I may get the chance to see Benja there but our schedules might conflict.
Suerte. Besos y brazos,
Miki
